"Commemorating
the Life and Career of One of North Carolina's Most Distinguished
Sons"
Welcome to the L.L Polk House!
The Leonidas LaFayette Polk House, circa 1878 and sometimes
described as "gingerbread Gothic" was originally located at 565 N.
Person St. L. L. Polk was born in Anson County on April
24, 1837; attended Davidson College; married Sarah
Pamela Gaddy in 1857; and settled on the homestead of his father.
His plantation life and marriage were interrupted by the Civil War.
Leonidas Polk survived the conflict and went on to become the
farmers' champion of North Carolina. He served in the General
Assembly; became the father of our State Department of Agriculture;
assisted in founding North Carolina State University and Meredith
College; was head of the National Farmers' Alliance and Industrial
Union; established and published the Progressive Farmer;
became the first North Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture and
hoped to win the nomination of the People's Party for President of
the United States in 1892... if he had lived four weeks longer!
Enjoy your step back in time...
